Black Mountain has been the site for cross-country skiing in the Rumford area for over 30 years. With trails developed by Chummy Broomhall, local two-time Olympian and designer of the Squaw Valley and Lake Placid Olympic trails, Black Mountain offers skiing for all abilities. The trails are groomed 15 feet wide each day for both skating and classic techniques. The area is known for having one of the East’s best racecourses, and was the site of the 2003 and 2004 Chevrolet US Cross Country Championships. Black Mountain also hosted the Banknorth Eastern High School Championships in 2004. The Center offers 35k of groomed trails, with snowmaking on 4 kilometers. During competitions, the spectator bridge provides a great vantage point to view, cheer, and take photos and is adjacent to the main lodge. Come inside to warm up by the fieldstone fireplace and grab a cup of coffee or hot chocolate and a snack from our affordable cafe.

Cross-country skiing is a new venture for this Western Maine apple orchard. The trail systems start with the obvious loops around the orchard and connecting logging roads between them. Connecting links have been established with lands owned by Loon Echo on Bald Pate Mountain . While it is not possible presently to ski to the summit, a trek on snowshoes will yield a fine view which includes numerous ponds and lakes. The apple packing room is converted to a winter warming hut amd clothes changing area. There is a limited number of snowshoes and skis for rent. Snacks are available sufficient to restore your energy after your time outside. Instruction and terrain is available to start the inexperienced outdoor enthusiast.

The new Rangeley Lakes Trails Center ( 524 Saddleback Mountain Road ) on Saddleback Mountain opened for the 2005/06 season with 35k of immaculately groomed loop trails. The trails are a minimum of 14’ wide, providing skating lanes and classic tracks on all sections. A Pacific Yurt warming hut is currently serving as the ski lodge until the permanent lodge is constructed. Ski rentals, wax, waxing benches, clothing, hot drinks and tempting snacks are available at the yurt.

The groomed trail loops include routes through the village and lodging facilities at the base of Sugarloaf. The beautiful solar-heated lodge and newly constructed trailside-warming hut are friendly starting and stopping points during your day. Fresh baked muffins, simmering soups and stews, and hearty sandwiches are just a few of the refreshments you’ll find at the Bull Moose Cafe.
