Waterboro was named after Colonel Joshua Waters who was one of the early proprietors of the area. The Abenaki Indians had named the area Massabesic, meaning “the place of much water” referring to the area’s lakes.Little Ossipee Lake is a popular summer destination and the largest subdivision in Maine resides in the Lake Arrowhead Community. Waterboro was one of towns devastated in the Great Fire of 1947, when the town center and most of the surrounding area burned.
