Located in the eastern region of Androscoggin county, the small town of Wales, Maine was first settled in 1773 by James Ross and other immigrants from Wales, England. It was given its name because its rolling landscape reminded these first settlers of home. Wales was incorporated in 1816 and is today considered part of the greater Lewiston – Auburn metropolitan area. Wales is 16 miles east of Lewiston and across Sabattus Pond from the town of Sabattus.
