Settled in 1765, this ME island town is located 16 miles from Rockland’s coast, reachable by a state operated ferry, and is a favorite summer retreat for artist, writers and musicians. Once a center for granite quarrying, stone taken from Vinalhaven was used in the construction of the Brooklyn Bridge. The island’s primary industries are fishing and tourism. Vinalhave is situated in a deep tadal creek. The first Lobster Pound was constructed on the island in 1875, it is said to be the first lobster pound ever made.
