Skowhegan, Maine has been called the ‘cross-roads of Maine’ as well as the ‘shire town of Somerset County’. It is the birthplace and life long home of Maine Senator Margaret Chase Smith and the beginning of the historic Canada Road. Skowhegan is the economic heart of Central Maine and the Kennebec region. Skowhegan is the Indian name for ‘place of the watch’ or ‘watching place for fish’. The Indians named the town this because they would camp here and spear the salmon as they made their way up the river to spawn.
