Peaks Island, Maine 04108
Peaks Island, ME Lodging, Real Estate, Travel, & Visitor Information
Known for a history of summer theater, The Gem Theater, Greenwood Garden Playhouse and the Pavilion, Peaks Island is officially part of the city of Portland. Multiple attempts to secede from Portland by the island residents, for various reasons, have been so far, unsuccessful. The island was a popular and cultured summer retreat from the late 1800’s to mid 1900’s and a testing ground for Hollywood directors and actors. One of the Island’s most prominent summer residents was John Ford, who is considered by many in the industry to be the one of greatest pioneering directors of all time. Ford was known for his introduction of location filming and westerns such as "Stagecoach" and "How Green was My Valley". George Cohan of Broadway fame also tested his productions here and the Barrymores and Jean Stapleton performed regularly on local stages. Today, the island is still a popular summer destination and boasts many great restaurants and natural attractions for visitors.
