Visit Machias, Maine. Machias was first settled in 1763. In June of 1775, Machias Bay was the sight of the first Naval battle during the American Revolution. The Burnham Tavern was used as a gathering place during the Revolution and is now a museum which features mementos from the first naval battle of the American Revolution. Once an industry leader in lumber and shipbuilding, much of the Machias economy is now centered around tourism and the University of Maine campus that is in Machias.
