The easternmost town of the contiguous United States, and originally part of Eastport, Lubec is home to the Quoddy Light Station B&B, on Quoddy Head, an adapted B&B from a former US Coast Guard Station Lighthouse, and a must-stay for the serious traveler. After the war of 1812, Lubec was the center of considerable smuggling of gypsum. Fisheries and agriculture were a staple industry in Lubec for many generations, the last sardine packing plant in town, Lubec Packing, ceased operations in late 2001, ending a long history in this industry. The R.J. Peacock Canning Company, a former sardine cannery, now processes salmon. Another venture at the Peacock site is a sea urchin hatchery.
