Considered part of the greater Lewiston – Auburn metropolitan area, the small Oxford county town of Hebron was first settled in 1778 by Captain Daniel Buckman and his family, as well as many other Revolutionary War veterans. Prior to its incorporation as a town in 1829, this area was called Bog Brook Plantation by the locals.
Before the development of Hebron as a mill town during the Industrial Era, its economy was primarily agricultural and the area was known for impressive orchards. Hebron is home to the Hebron Academy, a co-ed boarding school founded by Deacon William Barrows Jr. in 1804. For the first half of the 20th century, Hebron was also home to the Western Maine Sanatorium, a treatment facility for tuberculosis patients. The Sturtevant Home at Hebron Academy is a local landmark and Hebron was the birthplace of noted politician and jurist, Albion K. Parris.
