Eliot Maine was named for Robert Eliot, a member of the Provincial Council of New Hampshire. Eliot borders New Hampshire on the Picataqua River – the river separates Maine from New Hampshire. The community was named for Robert Eliot, a member of the Provincial Council of New Hampshire. Eliot Maine’s early settlers were attracted to Eliot’s prime fishing and abundant forests. The earliest settlers traveled the Piscataqua River in the 1600’s. In the late nineteenth and early twentieth century many summer cottages were built in Eliot.
