On April 7, 1854 a portion of the town of Hollis Maine became a separate town. It was named Dayton after Thomas Day who petitioned for for the town’s incorporation. The original inhabitants of the area were the Sokokis (Saco) Indians, the old Sokokis Trail is the modern day Route 5 that runs through town.
