History of Ogunquit Theatre Maine

The Ogunquit Playhouse began in 1933. The location was a renovated garage in Ogunquit’s Town Square.

After several years of presenting live performances, the playhouse was relocated to its current site by the Hartwig family. The Hartwig’s opened the modern-day Ogunquit Playhouse on July 17, 1937. It was a state-of-the-art theater and rivaled the playhouses of major cities.

John Lane – Theater Visionary

John Lake was hired as General Manager of the Ogunquit Playhouse in 1950 and eventually teamed with a business partner, Henry Weller. Lane and Weller began modernizing and improving the building and grounds. The Playhouse continued to grow and attract more audiences and some of the brightest stars from Broadway. Without the vision and dedication of John Lane the Ogunquit Playhouse would not be what it is today.

Beginning in the late 1990s the Playhouse began to produce its own shows.  In addition to designing and building sets and costumes, the Playhouse brought back stars, including Sally Struthers and Lucie Arnaz. The Manhattan Theatre Colony building was restored and the Children’s Theatre Program began. Today Children’s Theatre presentations continue to entertain both the young and young at heart.

The Ogunquit Playhouse is dedicated to producing the finest shows ever to appear on Broadway stages.  The legacy of Ogunquit Playhouse founders Walter Hartwig and John Lane lives on with the help and support of the Ogunquit community, individual and business donors and volunteers.
