Maine Harness Racing & Wagering
Harness racing is one of the most popular Maine spectator sports – attracting thousands annually.
Wagering on harness racing is permitted at harness racing tracks and at fairgrounds in Maine. Most of the racers, breeders, trainers and announcers involved in Maine Harness Racing are from Maine or from one of the other New England states.
The Maine State Harness Racing Commission oversees racing in the state. The Commission is appointed by the Governor and also oversees Off-Track Betting facilities. The USTA (United States Trotting Association) is a national organization that promotes the sport. USTA was founded in 1939. Since 1948 the organization has been headquartered in Columbus, Ohio. They have more than 20,000 members.
