Maine’s foliage season runs roughly from mid-September to mid-October, but this varies widely depending on weather, topography and geography. During this time, the deciduous trees of Maine begin their colorful transformation. Mid Coast Maine Fall Foliage Drives
Boothbay Harbor, Maine Fall Foliage Drive:
Begin in Boothbay Harbor, where shops, restaurants, inns, and chowder-houses surround the snug harbor. During your stay, take in the Boothbay Railway Village, enjoy a whale-watching cruise, a day sail or a visit to a nearby island. If you time it right, enjoy the Annual Fall Foliage Craft Festival in Boothbay, an annual Maine Event held each year around October 9th-10th. As you might guess, it’s one of the best the State has to offer in foliage, food, and fun.
Camden, Maine Fall Foliage Drive:
The Camden Hills, ablaze in fall color, slopes dramatically to the harbor. In 1912, Maine poet Edna St. Vincent Millay reflected on this mountains-to-the-sea landscape: “All I could see from where I stood/Was three long mountains and a wood;/I turned and looked the other way,/And saw three islands in a bay.” Today, you can drive to the 800-foot summit of Mt. Battie to take in the poet’s grand view of the hills and Penobscot Bay.
Unity, Maine Fall Foliage Drive:
From Belfast, take Rte. 137 to Rte. 220 north to the town of Unity. This little inland diversion brings you to the 130-year-old Belfast/Moosehead Railroad, offering fall foliage day trips as well as overnight packages and courses where you can learn to actually operate an engine! The foliage-rich trips take you past streams and lakes, highlighting the natural beauty of Maine.
