Maine Coon Cats

coon-cat-kittenNative to Maine is the Maine Coon Cat. Maine Coon Cats are one of the oldest breeds of feline in North America. These furry felines are said to be a mix of cat and coon – as in Raccoon. That is merely a myth – a biological impossibility. The coon cat does however have a bushy, furry tail that can resemble a raccoon tail. Read more about Maine Coon Cats. To feature your Maine business, contact us.

Maine Coon Cats

Maine Coons are brown tabby Maine Coon Cats. Maine Shags were Maine Coon Cats of different coloring. All are now commonly referred to as Maine Coon Cats.
A popular (and more believable) theory of the origin of Maine Coon Cats is that the breed of feline originated in the mating between short-haired domestic cats and overseas longhair cats – perhaps introduced by New England seamen or early explorers.

Maine coon cats are hardy and handsome. The cats are ideally suited for cold Maine winters. Maine Coon Cat breeders are seeking to preserve the Maine Coon Cat and its natural rugged qualities.

The Maine Coon Cat is a large, strong, and healthy cat. The Maine Coon Breeders and Fanciers Association was founded in 1968 to preserve and promote the Maine Coon Cat. MCBFA is composed of fanciers and breeder members worldwide united in admiration of these wonderful cats. The association’s website is www.mcbfa.org.

HISTORY OF MAINE COON CATS

Maine Coon cats are a popular breed of domestic cat known for their large size, long-haired coats, and friendly personalities. They are native to the state of Maine in the United States, where they were originally bred as working cats to control rodent populations on farms.

Maine Coons are one of the largest breeds of domestic cats, with males weighing between 13 and 18 pounds and females weighing between 8 and 12 pounds. They are known for their long, bushy tails, tufted ears, and distinctive “lynx tips” on the ends of their ears.

In terms of personality, Maine Coons are often described as being friendly, social, and intelligent. They enjoy interacting with their human family members and are often very playful. They are also known for their hunting instincts, and many Maine Coons enjoy playing with toys that simulate the hunting experience.

Maine Coons require regular grooming due to their long, thick coats. They should be brushed several times a week to prevent matting and to keep their coats looking healthy and shiny. They are generally healthy cats and have a life expectancy of 12-15 years. However, like all breeds, they may be prone to certain health issues, such as hip dysplasia and heart disease, so it is important to provide them with regular veterinary care.
