Professional Baseball In Maine – Portland Sea Dogs
Maine’s Official Minor League Baseball Team
In 1992 an application for a new Eastern League franchise in Portland, Maine was filed and granted. And so the Portland Sea Dogs Minor League Baseball team was born. They soon affiliated themselves with the Florida Marlins and began their first season.

The team began their career at their new location at Hadlock Field. In 1993 the field was renovated from a high school baseball field to meet regulations. Because the park is right next to the Portland Exposition Building the park seating had to be arranged somewhat differently than traditional ballparks. Whether by coincidence or because of the marine association of the team and their original parent team, the Marlins, the seating arrangement has almost a fishhook shape that gives the park a unique appearance.
In 2003 the Sea Dogs became affiliates of the Boston Red Sox, and following the change won back-to-back titles in the 2005 and 2006 seasons. There are many options to choose from if you’re looking to enjoy the Sea Dogs’ schedule. The team offers everything from season passes to single-game tickets. There are opportunities for comfortable seating in the premium boxes or traditional seating for the real game experience. And with general admission costing less than $10 for everyone, there is no better way to spend a summer day.
Besides offering affordable family fun the Sea Dogs have many seasonal surprises. The team begins the season with a welcome-back dinner that benefits youth alternatives. Throughout the season they hold most improved student days to honor educational accomplishments, giveaways, award days, and fireworks following the game. On Mother’s Day, the team hosts an annual 5k race. The proceeds from the race go to breast cancer research. And the male and female winners get to throw the ceremonial first pitch at a future game. The team doesn’t forget dads either. On Father’s day kids and their dads can come to the field before the game to play catch.
The biggest annual event of the season is the “Field of Dreams” game. The game started in August of 1995. The team wore replica Portland Eskimo, one of the first organized teams in Maine, flannel uniforms. The team then made their first “Field of Dreams” entrance out of a cornfield. It was loved so much that the tradition continues today and is one of the most loved games of the season.
Along with these great promotional events the team offers group discounts. They have wonderful ticket packages that allow busy fans to enjoy a great part of the season. And they hold a few noon games so fans can watch America’s favorite pastime on an extended lunch break. No matter how busy a schedule the Sea Dogs have a ticket option to suit most fans’ needs.
A day at the ballpark offers traditional American fun to people of all ages. Take ‘um out to the ballgame to enjoy the outdoors, breath in the scent of hotdogs and ketchup, and watch what has been known as America’s favorite pastime for over 140 years.
