First incorporated in 1771 and named after General John Winslow, the town of Winslow, Maine was settled by Plymouth Colonists after the land was given to Pilgrim governor William Bradford by the King of England. Fort Halifax was built in Winslow in 1754 under order of the Massachusetts General Court during the French and Indian War. Today, Fort Halifax’s rebuilt blockhouse is a National Historic Landmark. Famous residents of Winslow have included science fiction authors Sharon Lee and Steve Miller, senator Charles F. Johnson, congressmen Joshua Cushman and Thomas Rice, and PGA Tour golf caddy Mike Cowan.
