Andover, ME Lodging, Real Estate, Travel, & Visitor Information
Located in the central region of Oxford county, Andover, Maine is home to Angel Falls and Andover Falls as well as three access sites to the famous Appalachian Trail. First settled by Ezekiel Merrill in 1789, the town of Andover was named after his old home in Old Andover, Massachusetts. Because of the readily available water power provided by the falls, Andover quickly developed a booming mill, lumbering and manufacturing economy. Since the Civil War area, Andover has been a popular destination for sport fishermen, who enjoy the waters of nearby Richardson Lakes.
In 1960, Andover became the home of the Andover Earth Station, a satellite earth station for AT&T’s Telstar satellite. One other interesting Andover landmark is the Lovejoy Covered Bridge, a 70 foot long bridge built in 1868 and spanning the Ellis River.
