Massage Therapy: Maine Spa Vacations
Introduction to Massage
Treat yourself to a massage during your Maine vacation! Massages certainly have an appealing element of luxury and indulgence but they are also a wonderful, all-natural way to relieve stress and muscle tension.
There are over 80 types of massages practiced throughout the world. In the United States, Swedish massage are the most common. This type of massage involves long strokes and kneading motions. Because a Swedish massage focuses on the more superficial muscles of the body, it is a great choice for those who simply want to relax and let their cares melt away. If you’ve enjoyed Swedish massages before and you’d like to try something new, we suggest a heated stone massage. This form of massage involves smooth, heated basalt rocks. Some of the stones are placed on specific areas of your body while others are moved around to give you a unique sense of calm and rejuvenation. If you suffer from chronic muscle pain, you may want to try a deep tissue massage. The massage therapist will use deeper, more intense motions to release tension and allow your muscles to relax. He or she will concentrate on the areas of your body that require particular attention, such as the neck, shoulders, or back.
Massage techniques from Asia are gaining popularity in this country as well. One of these techniques is reflexology, an ancient Chinese healing system that targets specific points on the feet and hands that are believed to channel energy to the rest of the body. Shiatsu, also called acupressure, uses concepts from both the Chinese healing system of acupuncture and the traditional Japanese form of massage. Like acupuncture, Shiatsu focuses on balancing the energy flow in the body by targeting specific points on the feet and fingers.
Massage therapists can combine techniques to help people with injuries or special needs. Athletes can benefit from massages that target the muscle groups required for their sport. Many spas even offer massages designed to ease the body aches associated with pregnancy. What a wonderful gift for an expectant mother!
Many spas offer complimentary access to other facilities such as a pool, hot tub, or sauna, with each treatment so bring a bathing suit to get the most out of your spa experience.
What to Expect when you go for a Massage
Most massages are an hour long, although most spas offer 30-minute and 90-minute massages as well. When you arrive for your appointment, you’ll be asked a few questions. Your massage therapist will probably ask how you’d like to benefit from your massage. Tell him or her if you’re experiencing any muscle pain. You should also mention any medications you’re taking and any allergies you may have.
You will be shown to the private room where your massage will take place. Often there is soothing instrumental music or natural sounds, such as waves or falling rain, playing in the background. You will undress according to your comfort level and lie under the sheet. For most massages, you’ll be asked to lie on a padded table. There may be additional pillows to position your body correctly. Good massage therapists are very respectful of your privacy. They will leave the room while you undress and cover yourself with the sheet, and they will hold the sheet when you need to turn over during the massage.
A typical full-body massage will cover your back, arms, legs, feet, hands, head, neck, and shoulders. The massage therapist will use creams or oils to moisturize the skin and reduce friction. Some spas incorporate aromatherapy into their massages by using essential oils. You shouldn’t feel pain but if you do, don’t be afraid to ask the massage therapist to use lighter strokes. You may also request that he or she adjust the temperature or lighting in the room so you are completely comfortable.
When the massage is over, the massage therapist will leave the room so you can get dressed. Tips are encouraged by most establishments, although the recommended amount varies from 10% to 30%. If you are receiving a massage as part of a package, you may want to ask whether gratuity is included in the price.
You’ll leave feeling relaxed and rejuvenated. To get the maximum benefit from your massage, be sure to drink plenty of water. Water helps flush out the impurities that were released during your massage. If possible, avoid caffeine for the rest of the day.
