Welcome to Sunday River – this is Maine’s most popular winter ski resort. It is their snow-making and grooming that have led Sunday River to become one of the preeminent ski resorts in the east – there is a consistent base of snow from November to April. With such increased popularity, one would think that the slopes would become too crowded. Not so; the layout of the mountain with a trail network spanning 8 peaks really does spread out the skiers.
Remember, the Maine mountains typically don’t attract the same crowds as New Hampshire Ski resorts or Vermont Ski Resorts do. There are certainly times (Saturday mornings 10 am – 12 pm) and sections (Barker Mountain and Spruce Peak/South Ridge) that get congested, but with a little foresight, one can avoid most of the crowds. Regarding skiing terrain, there is something (a lot of something) for everyone. Just about every peak has some trail for each level of ability, which is ideal for allowing a group of skiers with varying ability levels to ride the same chair and meet back at the bottom. There is the South Ridge learning area for beginning skiers, followed by Dreammaker on North Peak.
For intermediates, there are nice cruisers off Spruce Peak (Risky Business and American Express), Jordan (Rogue Angel and Excalibur), Barker Mountain, and North Peak. For advanced skiers, there are nice cruisers from Barker (Right Stuff, Monday Mourning, and Top Gun), White Cap (Obsession), and Aurora (Air Glow). For the Expert skier, one can usually find some bumps and trees on and off White Cap (White Heat, Shockwave), Barker (Agony), Aurora (Vortex, Celestial), and Oz (Tin Woodsman and Ruby Palace). Directions:
Take I-95 (Maine Turnpike) to Exit 63 (Gray/Route 26).
Continue on Route 26 North to Bethel.
Follow Rt. 2 East for 2.6 miles.
Take a left onto Sunday River Road, marked by the large Sunday River Brewery (big building with red roof).
Follow Sunday River Road to a fork with a “Sunday River Ski Resort” sign.
Fork left and follow signs for the Grand Summit Hotel, base lodges, and amenities (1 mile).
Fork right and follow signs for the Jordan Grand Resort Hotel (5 miles).
