Winthrop, Maine is located in central Maine, 8 miles west of the state capital of Augusta. Winthrop’s quaint downtown is sandwiched between Maranacook Lake and Annabessacook Lake, connected by the Mill Stream. The town borders 10 lakes and ponds that offer wonderful fishing and other recreational opportunities. Winthrop was first settled in 1760 as Pondtown. The town was incorporated in 1771 as Winthrop in honor of the first governor of the Massachusetts Bay Colony, John Winthrop.
