The Sun 'n Surf Restaurant
Oceanfront Dining in Southern Maine
|
Ocean side dining in Maine does not get any better than this. If dining with an ocean view is your pleasure than a visit to southern Maine's Sun 'n Surf Restaurant at the Anchorage Inn is in order.
Local lore claims that most of Wells has worked here at one time or other. This family owned and operated restaurant dates back to the summer of 1963 when Normand "The Boss" Ramsey opened a Hot Dog and Clam Shack across from the Anchorage Hotel.
Much has changed since the early 1960's, the Anchorage Hotel is now the Anchorage Inn and the former "Fried Clam Hut" is now a full-service restaurant owned and operated by Normand Ramsey's son Ray, who purchased the business in 1979. The latest major renovations took place in 1993.
The ocean side views here are spectacular. The dining room has an outdoor patio that sits directly on the Atlantic Ocean. The Nubble and Boon Lighthouses can be seen on clear days. The sounds and smells of the ocean are all around you. The entrees are quite impressive.
We sat outside on the open air patio - just a few hundred feet from the mighty Atlantic. The Sun 'n Surf has a full service liquor license, we ordered cocktails, one of which was a memorable blend of dark rum, banana liqueur, apricot brandy and pineapple juice - look for it on the cocktail menu when you visit. We watched the seagulls dive and frolick after we placed our dinner orders.
The specialty salads are particularly interesting. I decided on the Oriental Fire Roasted Chicken Salad - delicious! The stir fry vegetables are marinated in a sesame and poppy seed dressing then topped with fresh roasted chicken breast drizzled with teriyaki glaze, and served on a bed of Romaine. The crispy fried wonton strip top it off - highly recommended.
I tried the Lobster Payette, a wonderful blend of fresh lobster meat, saffron and other spices, and pasta. This special house creation is exceptional. I also sampled my companions Fried Seafood Platter. The freshly fried pile of scallops, succulent Maine shrimp, and flaky haddock melted in your mouth.

Dessert in Maine means blueberries. The delightful Blueberry is Maine's official fruit. Healthy and delicious - I choose the Maine Blueberry Cobbler and was not at all disappointed.
The attire is casual. The food is delicious and the ocean views can not be beat. When the ocean calls - head to Maine's southern coast and the Sun 'n Surf restaurant. Tell them MELiving.com sent you.
